Hot, sometimes itchy, slightly swollen year-old ear piercing?
I got my earlobes pierced a year ago. A few weeks ago, the right one became itchy, swelled, and the earring would stick to my ear and I'd have to turn it to rip it away from the crust (nasty, I'm aware). It also hurt at times. It was oozing clear goo, and I hear infections have colored goo. So after a week that one cleared up. Now my left one is acting up. It started out oozing clear goo for a day or two, now it's hot, itchy, and painful and it stung when I cleaned it with rubbing alcohol. I'm wearing Lia Sophia earrings, and they say they've got the lowest nickel amounts that exist. What's wrong, and what do I do?
my guess would be you are allergic to the material the ear rings are made of, it doesn't matter if the nickel is super low or not you can still be allergic to it. I would switch the ear rings out to something you've worn before with no problems perhaps 14k gold? just make sure you have worn it before and haven't had this sort of problem wearing it.
next DO NOT clean them with alcohol, don't use peroxide or bactine switch that to non-iodized sea salt or some liquid soap, go back to cleaning them twice a day
Sea salt: you can get a large container of non-iodized sea salt at places like walmart for 2-3 bucks, it will last you a long while. mix 1/4 teaspoon to every 8oz of water, tap water will do fine. soak for 5-10 minutes - or soak a cotton ball in the solution and rub it over the ear. you can also pick up H2Ocean which is a sea salt spray you can find that at tattoo shops, or at hot topics
Soap: get some antibacterial, or medical grade soap its preferred to be liquid and unscented a generic version of dial will do you fine or you can go with proven soap which is recommended more than an antibacterial, soap up and rinse well
the reason why I say no rubbing alcohol, peroxide, bactine or things of that nature is because they can be very harsh on the tissue and are not to be used in piercings because it can damage tissues and delay healing.
if this persists I suggest seeing a doctor about getting some antibiotics to clear things up.
