Desert National Park, A Unique Nature Sanctuary
Jaisalmer's fascinating Desert National Park is without a doubt a major area of parkland which attracts a multitude of visitors eager to experience the desert environment and its unique wildlife. The expansive sanctuary is located in the Thar Desert and covers an area of more than 3,150 square kilometres making it the largest wildlife sanctuary in the state of Rajasthan and possibly in the whole of India. The park is mainly composed of craggy rocks, salt lake bottoms and sand dunes. The flora consists of salai, palm, ronj and dhok trees amongst the sparse shrubs, grasses and xerophytes.
Since there is very little leafy vegetation in the immense natural refuge there are naturally few large herbivorous animals, and therefore no large carnivores are found in the park either. Camels with their hardy adaptability are an exception to the rule; other denizens at the park include blackbucks, hares, foxes, chinkaras, Bengal foxes, desert cats, desert wolves, gerbils and hedgehogs.
However the sanctuary boasts of a vast multitude of avian life, with many resident and migratory birds. The park's most significant feature may be the magnificent endangered Indian bustard which can be seen in considerable numbers. Other interesting varieties of birds found at the sanctuary include gray partridges, eagles, spotted sand grouses, Demoiselle cranes, peafowl, larks, quails, falcons, harriers, warblers, orioles, vultures, kestrels, babblers and many other varieties. Reptilian inhabitants include desert monitors, spiny-tailed lizards, chameleons and some snake varieties.
The Desert National Park may be reached either by four wheel drive vehicle or via an exciting camel ride. Visitors are encouraged to bring a good pair of binoculars and a camera equipped with zoom lenses. Water holes at the park are particularly good locations to observe wildlife.
Travellers who visit the national park are also recommended to explore the Wood Fossil Park, located only 17 km away. Here the traveller will be able to see massive fossilized tree trunks and sea shells which are estimated to be 180 million years old.
