Yellow Topaz and Citrine – Birthstones of November
The two birthstones of November, yellow topaz and citrine have their history closely interwoven with each other.
Yellow Topaz
Gemstone topaz has been known for at least 2000 years now and has always been greatly valued for its stunning hues and mystical powers. Egyptians believed that the gem protected its wearer from any harm. The golden glow led Romans to associate the gem with Jupiter, who is God of the Sun.
The shades of topaz ranges from amber gold to fine cognac, from pink orange hue to peach, and all different tones of brown color. According to some legends topaz was used to free a person from evil or magic spells.
The birthstone of November, Topaz is also the anniversary stone for the 4th year of marriage. The gemstone is held symbolic of strength and intelligence and it is even believed that the gem has calming effect on its wearer.
Blue Topaz is another variety of this gem that has gained much popularity in recent times. However these topaz are more often than not, treated and thus one has to careful when buying them.
It is said that true topaz is quite a rare gem. It is many times confused with quartz (citrine) and glass. In the past just about all yellow gems were referred to as topaz.
Citrine
Celebrated for its golden hue, gemstone citrine is the other birthstone for November. Given its similarity in appearance with yellow topaz, citrine has its past closely interwoven with that of Topaz. While Topaz scores 8 on Mohs scale of Hardness, citrine is relatively soft and also lacks the brilliance of a topaz.
The gemstone derives its name from the French word Citron, which means lemon. The gem is loved for its earthen tones. It gained much popularity in the retro jewelry of the 1940s. The gemstone was often seen with peridots, ruby and aquamarine in brooches, necklaces and other jewelry of that era.
Due to its resemblance with topaz, citrine was also called as quartz topaz. Most of the times, it is even sold as topaz, which is much precious a gemstone and thus claims very high prices.
However citrine can be bought at much lower prices. They even are easily available in large sizes which make them a popular choice as center piece in various forms of jewelry.
