Winter Olympics - what do you love about it and what do you hate?
I am loving watching the winter olympics, probably because I live in Australia which is anything but a country that focusses on winter sports, and I am glued to downhill skiing. Got to say the snowboarding is a new one and I was excited to see an aussie win (go Torah Bright).
For me, however, the main drawback was the mens ice skating where the russian guy just missed out to the American guy (dont ask me names). Whilst the american was obviously fantastic (yes he was) the other guy did things far more difficult and didnt land on his posterior on the ice but lost out by the teeniest of margins.
Now I have to confess Im not a person who usually watches this stuff (as if you didnt guess this already) and I dont expect aussies to win much because, lets face it, show us water and we are happier, but I would love to know what appeals most and least to you and why.
I have never been keen on sports where the performance is rated by judges. There can be too much argument about it. A race is simpler, just measure the time. A game of hockey or whatever just count the goals, it isn't a matter of argument.
I love seeing alpine skiing. Nordic skiing events aren't so great for the spectator, but they are undoubtedly a true test of athletic ability. The sliding events like luge, bobsleigh and skeleton are great to watch and are clearly an athletic test as well as a technical one. I think the winter olympics should stick to the proper, traditional events and not get caught up with fads, even if some of those other sportsmen are very talented at what they do.
Not sure what to make of curling, like sliding huge giant kettles across an ice-sheet.
One thing I would like to see is each national olympic association setting proper qualification standards, not just to get someone in the games, but to get only people in there who can realistically compete. What on earth is the point in having an Ethiopian cross country skier in there? I am sure he is the best his country has to offer, but he can't compete with the field, doesn't Ethiopia have better things to spend money on? British alpine skiers, again, pointless.
