Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelet?
A woman that I work with wore a pink breast cancer awareness bracelet to work today that said "Save the Ta-Ta's". Her boss is a breast cancer survivor. So, her boss walks into her office, see's the bracelet and starts SCREAMING at her to take the bracelet off because it's disrespectful. The boss literally spent about 15 minutes yelling at her saying that it made her feel uncomfortable because she's a survivor.
Anyone have any opinions on this bracelet? Or her boss' reaction to her wearing it?
Some of the profits from these bracelets go to Breast Cancer Awareness & Research so I'd think that this woman would be happy to see her wearing a bracelet like that???
If her boss actually screamed at her, and that is not simply an exaggeration on your friend's part, then yes, her response was inappropriate. But only the screaming bit - as a so-far survivor of breast cancer myself I am 100% in support of hr boss's feelings towards these bracelets.
How would you feel about bracelets in support of penile cancer that said 'Save the Willies' or 'I love D!cks'? Or bracelets in support of testicular cancer that said 'I love Nads' or 'Save the Bollocks'? If you find any of those slogans at all disrespectful, distasteful or inappropriate, you should question why you find the same silly language and sexualisation appropriate for another kind of cancer.
I've had breast cancer, and I don't find that slogan in the least supportive; and of all the hundreds of women with breast cancer I have met through support networks, some of whom have survived it so far and some of whom have died of it, not one has appreciated 'joke' slogans like Save the Tatas, Save Second Base or I Love Boobies. All have believed they trivialise a deadly disease, and have questioned why support for other cancers doesn't give rise to such silly slogans.
Breast cancer is a deadly disease, with disfiguring surgery, gruelling treatments and no cure. Sexualising breasts in this way, and calling breasts by childish names, just adds to the popular notion of breast cancer as a trivial and somehow 'sexy' disease.
We should be campaigning for breast cancer awareness because it's a deadly disease - it kills an average of 112 women in the US every day, and an average of 33 women in the UK every day - not because we 'love boobies' or want to 'save tatas'.
And it's all the more silly because by the time women reach they age at which they are actually at risk from breast cancer, interest in their 'tatas' is minimal , trust me on that one - 95% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over 40, 80% are over 50 and the average age at diagnosis is a little over 60.
What's wrong with calling breasts 'breasts' and having a slogan that actually means something? Or just donating directly - at least then you'd know that ALL the money was going to a breast cancer charity.
And be honest about about it - people are wearing these bracelets as a fashion accessory, not to try and incease breast cancer awareness
